The printers offered the
children jobs as apprentices when they reached the age of twelve (the
school leaving age had just been raised) - with the promise that after 7
years they could be earning a whole pound a week!
After lunch, and a candle
dipping experience, more time was spent visiting shops and exploring.
The baker's was visited by nearly everyone and the stock of
freshly-baked bread soon disappeared - I don't suppose much reached
home.
A horse and carriage ride
was another treat, and for some lucky children who hadn't already spent
every penny they had, there was a ride on the swing boats at the
old-fashioned fair.
The whole day was fun, the
children behaved like angels, it didn't rain and no-one was sick! A
real treat. |
