Blists Hill

On Tuesday 14th June, Classes 5 and 6 visited Blists Hill for a Victorian experience.  Arriving shortly before 11.00 am, the classes split into five groups and, after changing some present-day money into Victorian money, spent the next hour and a quarter walking around the streets visiting the shops, trying to work out what could be purchased for the few pennies that had been received in exchange for their pound coins!

The printers offered the children jobs as apprentices when they reached the age of twelve (the school leaving age had just been raised) - with the promise that after 7 years they could be earning a whole pound a week!

After lunch, and a candle dipping experience, more time was spent visiting shops and exploring.  The baker's was visited by nearly everyone and the stock of freshly-baked bread soon disappeared - I don't suppose much reached home.

A horse and carriage ride was another treat, and for some lucky children who hadn't already spent every penny they had, there was a ride on the swing boats at the old-fashioned fair.

The whole day was fun, the children behaved like angels, it didn't rain and no-one was sick!  A real treat.
